David Khani, CFA
Co-Director of Research, Senior Managing Director, Energy & Natural Resources
Co-Director of Research David Khani has more than 20 years of investment experience, including 13 years following several industries within the energy sector.
Mr. Khani joined FBR Capital Markets & Co. (FBRC) in August 1998 as a senior analyst in the energy & natural resources group, most recently covering the oil and gas exploration and production and coal mining industries. He became a managing director and co-head in 1999, helping to build and diversify the firm’s energy group, with research coverage that currently spans from $100 million equity market cap producers to the large global oil and natural gas and coal mining companies.
In February 2007, Mr. Khani was appointed director of research. He represents a team of approximately 60 equity and policy analysts known for their detailed knowledge of not only the S&P 500 issuers in their respective spaces, but also their in-depth understanding of small- and mid-cap names that often are unrecognized by larger Wall Street firms.
FBRC’s equity analysts cover more than 400 companies, focusing their expertise on seven vertical industry sectors—consumer, diversified industrials, energy & natural resources, financial institutions, insurance, real estate, and technology, media & telecom.
Prior to joining FBRC, Mr. Khani spent more than five years covering large-capitalization companies in the oil and gas sector at Bear Stearns and Prudential Securities and coal mining and local gas distribution industries during his tenure at Lehman Brothers.
Mr. Khani is known for his in-depth commodity and company research and for consistently going against the grain to help clients generate alpha. He received The Wall Street Journal “Best on the Street” award in the mining & metals sector in 2005.
Mr. Khani received his B.A. in biological sciences from the State University of New York at Binghamton and his M.B.A. in finance and corporate accounting from the William E. Simon Graduate School of Business at the University of Rochester. He is a member of the CFA Institute and the Washington Society of Investment Analysts.
